Ajanta Neog emerged as the defining woman face of the new Assam cabinet, while Atul Bora, Rameswar Teli and Charan Boro also took oath alongside Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: As the BJP-led NDA government began its third consecutive term in Assam on Tuesday, senior BJP leader Ajanta Neog once again emerged as one of the most prominent faces in the new cabinet, symbolising both political resilience and women’s leadership in Assam’s power corridors.
In a political landscape long dominated by men, Neog’s journey stands out as one shaped by resilience and quiet determination. Draped in grace yet grounded in administrative experience, she returned to the cabinet as Assam’s first woman Finance Minister, a role that has already placed her in the state’s political history.
A five-time MLA from Golaghat, Neog has represented the constituency since 2001, making her one of the state’s longest-serving women legislators. From the courtrooms of the Gauhati High Court to the Assembly floor, her career reflects persistence through personal tragedy and political transformation.
Born in Guwahati in 1964, Neog studied at Handique Girls’ College before earning MA, LLB and LLM degrees from Gauhati University. She entered politics after her husband, former minister Nagen Neog, was killed in a ULFA attack in 1996. What began in grief gradually transformed into a public life marked by endurance and influence. After years in Congress, she joined the BJP in 2020 and continued her winning streak.
Alongside Neog, senior AGP leader Atul Bora also took oath. Representing Bokakhat, Bora remains one of the NDA’s key regional allies and has earlier handled agriculture and urban development portfolios.
Former Union minister Rameswar Teli, a prominent face from Assam’s tea tribe community, returned to state politics after serving in key ministries at the Centre, including petroleum and labour.
BPF leader Charan Boro was also inducted into the cabinet. A representative from Majbat, he previously managed departments linked to transport and Bodoland welfare.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass is expected to take over as Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
