“Will Zubeen Garg Ever Get Justice?” Court to Hear Crucial Bail Pleas

Key hearing scheduled on January 22 as legal proceedings enter a crucial phase in the high-profile investigation of Zubeen Garg’s death case; Wife Garima Garg and sister Palme Borthakur arrived in the court

Guwahati: Anticipation is mounting ahead of Thursday’s hearing on the bail pleas of five accused in the case connected to the death of legendary Assamese singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg. The Kamrup District and Sessions Judge’s Court in Guwahati is set to take up the matter, marking a significant moment in a case that has drawn widespread public attention.

This new development comes close on the heels of the submission of a charge sheet by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Assam Police in an investigation into the circumstances leading to Garg’s death. Prosecutors in the case reported in court that the accused initially had petitioned them for bail, citing their cooperation in investigations and the progress made in the investigation process.

Based on the findings of the SIT, five people have been accused in the charge sheet, with specific roles attributed to each in the sequence of events leading up to the incident. While Garg’s manager, Siddhartha Sharma, and close associate Shekharjyoti Goswami, have been accused of murder, his cousin, Sandipan Garg, a suspended officer of the Assam Police, was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Investigators have claimed that the charge sheet is backed by a substantial body of evidence, which includes witness testimony, forensics, medical records, digital data, as well as overseas correspondence. However, the accused have firmly denied the allegations, asserting their innocence.

The case reached its fourth hearing amidst active legal proceedings, with leading counsels for both sides present. Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar confirmed that these five accused have finally made bail applications: Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddhartha Sharma, Amritprabha Mahanta, Sandipan Garg, and Nandeshwar Bora.

Furthermore, the court has fixed January 22 for arguments on the bail pleas, while charge framing and related proceedings are slated for January 30, setting the stage for a decisive phase in a case closely watched across Assam.
