Zubeen Garg Death Case: Public Prosecutor Seeks Time to Review Charge Sheet

Next hearing fixed for January 17; multiple petitions pending before court

Guwahati: Senior advocate Ziaul Kamar, appointed by the government as the public prosecutor in the Zubeen Garg death case, on Tuesday said a detailed review of the charge sheet is essential before further progress can be made in the trial.

Addressing the media, Mr. Kamar described the case as a serious responsibility and said the prosecution is preparing for a rigorous legal process. He noted that the official charge sheet has not yet been made available to him, and its examination would be crucial to assess the evidence and legal provisions invoked against the accused.

He informed that on January 3, the court took up around five petitions related to the case. As the current public prosecutor sought additional time to address the applications, the court scheduled the next hearing for January 17. Mr. Kamar said he will appear on that date to review the status of the case and determine the next steps.

According to him, the framing of charges is unlikely on January 17, as one of the accused has sought access to relevant case documents, a process that may take time.

The senior advocate also outlined other pending applications, including a bail plea filed by Amritprabha Mahanta, a request by Siddharth Sharma for a hearing through video conferencing, and an application by Shyamkamu Mahanta seeking permission to open a bank account. The court has further directed the submission of all documents related to Mahavir Aquare.

Mr. Kamar emphasised that the prosecution would proceed carefully and in accordance with the law, highlighting the need for a thorough and transparent process in a case that has drawn wide public attention.
