The decision came amid recent developments in Bangladesh; the BCCI allows Kolkata Knight Riders to sign a replacement player

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has directed IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman ahead of the 2026 season. The decision was taken in view of recent developments and prevailing sensitivities, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told media.
“Due to the recent developments that are going on all across, BCCI has instructed the franchise KKR to release one of their players, Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh. If KKR seek a replacement, BCCI will allow it,” Saikia said.
KKR had signed Mustafizur at the IPL auction held in Abu Dhabi in December, outbidding franchises such as Chennai Super Kings. The left-arm fast bowler became the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history.
The BCCI’s move comes amid criticism over violence against minorities in Bangladesh and ahead of India’s scheduled white-ball tour of the country in September 2026. Allowing KKR to bring in a replacement is expected to help the franchise maintain squad balance while avoiding potential off-field complications.
KKR are now likely to explore options for an overseas fast bowler as they prepare for the 2026 IPL season.
