New Delhi: Former India batter Ajinkya Rahane on Thursday announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished 15-year career that saw him emerge as one of India’s most dependable performers, particularly in overseas conditions.
The 38-year-old, who last represented India in the second Test against the West Indies in July 2023, announced his decision through a video on social media.
“I have always relied on timing in my batting… Today, I feel the timing is right for me to move on and announce my retirement from international cricket and all formats,” Rahane said.
Rahane made his international debut in 2011 and went on to play 85 Tests, scoring 5,077 runs, including 12 centuries. He also featured in 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is, amassing 2,962 and 375 runs, respectively.
His defining moment came during India’s historic 2020-21 Test series victory in Australia, when he led an injury-hit side to a remarkable 2-1 triumph after Virat Kohli’s departure. Rahane remained unbeaten in six Tests as captain, winning four and drawing two.
Despite stepping away from international cricket, Rahane remains active in domestic cricket, having captained Mumbai to the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy title, and has continued to feature in the IPL.
