The tribal organisation has demanded the safe and unconditional release of two youths allegedly abducted while travelling near the 9th MR/Maremei area

Kangpokpi: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has called a 48-hour total shutdown in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district from 5 pm on October 29 to 5 pm on October 31, demanding the safe and unconditional release of two Kuki youths who went missing on October 28.
The youths, identified as Paoginlal Hangsing and Thangginlun Chongloi, are residents of Taphou Kuki village. According to the village authority, they were returning home from the Hengbung police outpost when they were allegedly abducted around 5.30 pm near the 9th MR/Maremei area by unidentified persons. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
The Taphou Kuki Village Authority has urged law enforcement agencies and government authorities to trace the youths, ensure their safe release and conduct an impartial investigation to identify those responsible.
During the shutdown, shops, markets, vehicles, educational institutions and government and private offices are expected to remain closed. Medical services, media personnel and security forces have been exempted.
CoTU criticised what it described as a security lapse and discriminatory treatment of the Kuki-Zo community by security forces and the state government. The organisation alleged that incidents involving other communities received faster responses, while cases involving Kuki-Zo people faced delays or inaction.
CoTU warned that it would intensify its agitation if the youths were not released safely and unharmed. The allegations surrounding the incident have not been independently verified.
