Nagaon Lok Sabha By-Poll: 2,112 Polling Stations Open as Three-Way Battle Begins

Voting gets underway across 2,112 polling stations as BJP’s Debashish Sharma, Congress’ Sibamoni Bora and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal face off in a three-way contest

Nagaon: The battle for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat began on Tuesday as polling got underway at 7 am, with 17.68 per cent voter turnout recorded by 9 am. Voting is taking place across 2,112 polling stations, with 19,02,009 voters eligible to cast their ballots in the by-election.

The three-way contest features BJP’s Devashish Sharma, Congress’ Sibamoni Bora and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. Fifteen candidates are in the fray, with polling scheduled to continue until 5 pm.

Sharma cast his vote at Mayong Higher Secondary School soon after polling began. He became emotional after voting and appealed to people to exercise their franchise, saying voting was important for strengthening democracy. He also extended his best wishes to his fellow candidates.

The Congress candidate, Sibamoni Bora, cast her vote at Jajori Majgaon, expressing confidence in receiving support from both minority and majority communities. Her daughter, who accompanied her, also expressed confidence in Bora’s victory and spoke of the public response during the campaign.

The election authorities have deployed 9,664 polling personnel, along with 86 micro-observers, 69 Flying Squad Teams and 69 Static Surveillance Teams. Webcasting has been arranged at all polling stations.
