BJP takes an early lead in 30 of 40 contested wards as Silchar awaits the first elected council of its newly constituted municipal corporation

Silchar: The BJP has established an early lead in 30 of the 40 contested wards as counting began on Tuesday for the first-ever Silchar Municipal Corporation election.
According to initial trends from the first round, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is leading in three wards, while the Congress is ahead in four. Independent candidates are leading in the remaining three wards.
Counting began at 8 am at the Ramnagar ISBT campus amid tight security. The exercise is being conducted across seven halls, each with 14 counting tables, with officials expecting the process to be completed within a maximum of four rounds. Depending on the electorate, individual wards are being counted using three to four tables.
The Silchar Municipal Corporation has 42 wards, but BJP candidates were elected unopposed in two, leaving 40 wards for the counting process. Polling for the landmark civic election was held on October 3, with around 71 per cent turnout recorded among more than 2.7 lakh eligible voters.
The final results will determine the composition of Silchar’s first elected municipal corporation council. Security personnel and civil administration officials have been deployed at the counting venue to ensure a smooth and orderly process.
