A protest erupted on NH-17 near Azara after Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria died. Police are investigating alleged assault and a suicide claim

Guwahati: A protest erupted along National Highway 17 near Azara in Guwahati on Saturday following the death of 22-year-old Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria, with residents blocking the highway and disrupting traffic towards the airport.
Nimisha, a student of a five-year integrated course at Gauhati University, was found unconscious near Garal PHC in the early hours of Saturday. She was taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where doctors declared her dead.
Police have detained 26-year-old Asik Ali, who was reportedly known to Nimisha and has been described as her boyfriend. Investigators are examining the events at Rudra’s Kitchen, a homestay in Dharapur, where Nimisha had reportedly stayed with Ali.
According to her family, Nimisha called her mother during the night in a distressed state and said she had been physically assaulted. Her father alleged that she told her mother, “They have kicked me on the chest. I cannot breathe.” The call subsequently went silent.
A preliminary magisterial inquest reportedly recorded injury marks on her face, head, hands and private parts, although the circumstances and significance of those injuries remain under investigation.
Police said Ali has claimed that Nimisha died by suicide after hanging herself. The claim has not been confirmed, and investigators said they are examining all possible angles.
