Assam PSU Goes Beyond State Borders: Rs 1,200-Crore E-Methanol Plant Takes Shape in Gujarat

Assam PSU APCL joins Deendayal Port Authority for a Rs 1,200-crore e-methanol plant at Kandla, Gujarat, producing 150 TPD of green fuel

Gujrat: Assam has taken a major step towards expanding its clean-energy footprint beyond the state with the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a 150-tonne-per-day e-methanol plant at Kandla, Gujarat.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal attended the ceremony for the project, being jointly developed by Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited (APCL) and the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA).

The first phase of the project involves an investment of more than Rs 1,200 crore, with the facility expected to produce around 50,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually at full capacity.

The project is designed to supply a lower-carbon alternative fuel for the maritime sector and support India’s transition towards cleaner energy. It is also expected to generate more than 3,500 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

For APCL, the project marks an expansion beyond Assam and provides the state-owned enterprise with an opportunity to enter the national clean-energy and maritime fuel market.

The Assam CM described the initiative as significant for Assam, highlighting the role of an Assam-based PSU in taking its operations beyond the state and contributing to India’s green-energy transition.
