The court’s order paves the way for the release of the indigenous and land rights activist, who was detained following protests against a proposed Hyatt hotel project near Kaziranga

Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on Friday quashed the detention of indigenous and land rights activist Pranab Doley under the National Security Act (NSA), paving the way for his release after 117 days in custody.
A division bench passed the order while hearing Doley’s challenge to his detention, advocate Dipesh Agarwala, who represented him, confirmed. A copy of the judgment was not immediately available.
Doley, convenor of the Greater Kaziranga Land and Human Rights Protection Committee, was arrested on July 12 following protests against a proposed luxury Hyatt hotel at Ingle Pathar, near Kaziranga National Park.
Police had accused him of trespassing into the project site and carrying deadly weapons during the protest. Although a Golaghat sessions court granted him bail on July 29, the Assam government invoked the NSA the following day, preventing his release.
The government had also alleged his involvement in suspicious foreign transactions in violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act. Indigenous communities have opposed the proposed five-star hotel for four years, citing concerns over land rights and local livelihoods.
