Najiar, in judicial custody over the August 19 Shillong rally violence cases, has been directed to surrender on October 1
Shillong: A Shillong sessions court has granted 14 days of interim bail to Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) general secretary Reuben Najiar following the death of his father.
Najiar, who was in judicial custody in connection with cases linked to violence during a KSU-sponsored motorcycle rally in Shillong on August 19, was released on September 17. The court has directed him to surrender on October 1.
Najiar was among the KSU leaders arrested following incidents of stone-pelting and vandalism during the black-flag rally, which had been permitted by the East Khasi Hills district administration. The investigation later expanded, with cases registered at Sadar, Mawlai and Rynjah police stations and additional KSU leaders taken into custody.
The total number of KSU leaders arrested in connection with the cases has risen to six, including KSU president Raymond Kharjana, vice-president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, assistant organising secretary Jeremiah Pohthmi, Mihngi Circle general secretary Samuel Kharbani and Shillong East Circle president Banjop Dkhar.
Dkhar was the latest to be arrested, with the Special Investigation Team taking him into custody near NEIGRIHMS on September 11. Najiar’s release is temporary, and the investigation into the August 19 incidents remains underway.
