Tezpur: Tezpur University has announced plans to constitute a high-level committee to review and strengthen its existing mechanisms for supporting students’ mental well-being following the death of 20-year-old student Jyotishman Boruah.
Boruah, a fifth-semester student of the Integrated BSc/MSc Chemistry programme, was found dead in his hostel room on Wednesday afternoon. Police suspect suicide.
Sonitpur SSP Barun Purkayastha said police received information around 1.30 pm, after which the body was recovered and sent to Kanaklata Civil Hospital for necessary examination and post-mortem.
University Registrar Chandan Goswami said Boruah was a resident of Nagaon district. He was sharing the room with another student who had gone to class in the morning. Police said a diary was also recovered, but its contents have not been disclosed as the investigation is underway.
The university expressed condolences to Boruah’s family, friends and classmates and said it is cooperating with the authorities.
The proposed committee will consult students, faculty, wardens and counsellors before recommending measures to strengthen student support systems. The university also urged stakeholders to avoid sharing unverified information or personal details.
