The 2006-batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer takes charge of the CRPF’s specialised jungle-warfare force after extensive counter-insurgency experience
Guwahati: Senior IPS officer Sanjukta Parashar, popularly known as the “Iron Lady of Assam” for her counter-insurgency work, has taken charge as Inspector General of the CRPF’s elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA).
A 2006-batch IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Parashar succeeds 1996-batch IPS officer Danesh Rana. Her appointment makes her the first woman to head CoBRA, the CRPF’s 10-battalion specialised jungle-warfare force.
Parashar began her career in 2008 as an Assistant Commandant in Makum, Assam, and later served in Udalguri during a period of conflict involving Bodo groups and migrants. Her operational experience in Assam and the Northeast brought her national attention.
She has also served as Deputy Inspector General with the National Investigation Agency, handling cases related to terrorism, extremism and national security.
Parashar studied political science at Indraprastha College for Women and later pursued International Relations at Jawaharlal Nehru University. She subsequently completed an MPhil and PhD focusing on US foreign policy.
CoBRA specialises in jungle and guerrilla warfare, including long-range patrols, intelligence-based operations and counter-insurgency missions.
