UPPL stages protests across BTR, alleging law-and-order failures and welfare irregularities under the BPF-led government and demanding urgent action
Kokrajhar: The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) on August 31 staged two-hour sit-in demonstrations across all five district headquarters of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), protesting what it described as deteriorating law and order and irregularities in welfare and development activities during the 11-month BPF-led government.
Protests were held in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Tamulpur and Udalguri. In Kokrajhar, party workers and senior leaders demonstrated at the Kokrajhar HS & MP School premises from 1 pm.
UPPL claimed that more than 23 incidents, including killings, body recoveries and bomb blasts, had been reported across the BTR during the tenure of the BPF government. The party demanded stronger protection for lives and property and immediate action to curb violence.
The party also sought a crackdown on alleged “Syndicate Raj” and illegal tax collection, including at the Srirampur Inter-State Check Gate. UPPL further demanded uninterrupted Orunodoi benefits for existing beneficiaries and inclusion of more poor and marginalised women.
A memorandum containing the demands will be submitted to the Assam Chief Minister through the District Commissioners of all five districts.
