Protesters sought urgent repairs to NH-27 service roads, toll tax exemption for local residents and a service road alongside the Raha flyover
Nagaon: Strong protests were staged near the toll gate in Raha, Nagaon district, on August 31 over the deteriorating condition of service roads along National Highway 27, days after a fatal road accident at Khetri claimed six lives.
The protest was organised by several local groups, including the Raha Regional Students’ Union, Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Raha Regional Tiwa Students’ Union and Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti. Hundreds of residents and activists joined the demonstration, demanding immediate repairs and improved road safety.
Protesters accused the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) of neglecting the highway despite repeated complaints. They also questioned the collection of toll fees while alleging that the road remains in poor condition.
The protesters demanded repair of the service roads, toll exemption for local residents and construction of a service road alongside the Raha flyover.
Nagaon District Commissioner Devashish Sharma reached the site and held discussions with the protesters. He said the administration had conveyed their concerns to the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary and had repeatedly raised the matter with NHAI.
Following the discussions and assurances of further engagement, the protesters agreed to withdraw the agitation and temporary highway blockade.
