Congress accuses the Manipur government of failing to protect civilians and curb violence ahead of the September 2 Assembly session
Imphal: The opposition Congress in Manipur has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, accusing his government of failing to protect civilian lives and property ahead of the Assembly session beginning September 2.
Addressing a press conference on August 28, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary Soraisam Manaoton said the government had failed in its primary responsibility of ensuring citizens’ safety.
“There is absolutely no point in having a government if it cannot fulfil its primary duty of protecting innocent citizens and their properties,” Manaoton said, urging the Chief Minister to take moral responsibility and step down. The Congress leader also accused the government of favouring a particular community, alleging that this had further deepened divisions in the state.
The party renewed its criticism following the August 27 killing of four Liangmai Naga individuals in an attack allegedly carried out by suspected Kuki militants along the IT Road.
Manaoton said the continuing violence showed that the government had failed to restore peace and normalcy despite taking office in February 2026 following President’s Rule. The Congress is expected to raise the security situation and alleged law-and-order failures during the upcoming Assembly session.
