The Assam government is coordinating rescue efforts and trying to establish contact with residents from several districts
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 28 said the state government had identified 12 residents who remained untraced in Nepal following the devastating flash floods.
Sarma said authorities were working to establish contact with those on the list and ensure their safe rescue. The residents are from Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Hojai, Kamrup Metropolitan and Nalbari districts.
Among those identified are Rituparna Brahma, Mantri Basumatary and Soneswar Narzary from Daidak village under Dokmoka police station in Karbi Anglong. Brahma and Basumatary had reportedly travelled to Nepal for work and were employed at a hydropower project near the Trishuli River.
Other names on the list include Rahul Daimary of Golaghat and Shatadal Nath of Hojai. From Kamrup Metropolitan, those identified include Pankaj Naug, Dipali Sarkar and Manash Kumar Ghosh.
Five people were also identified from Nalbari, including Pankaj Barman, Arun Mahanta, Samar Bezbaruah and Tirtha Chaliha. Barman and Bezbaruah were later confirmed safe by their families.
The flash floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche and glacier-related event, caused widespread destruction across Nepal, damaging roads, bridges and power infrastructure.
The Assam government has opened helplines through Assam House in New Delhi to assist families seeking information about residents stranded or missing in Nepal. Rescue teams and helicopters continue to search affected areas.
