Manipur police summon JFD convenor Jeetendra Ningombam over an FIR linked to the group’s NRC-before-Census campaign and general strike
Imphal: Porompat Police Station in Manipur’s Imphal East summoned Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) convenor Jeetendra Ningombam on August 21 in connection with a suo motu FIR registered over the organisation’s 48-hour general strike demanding that the NRC be updated before Census 2027.
Ningombam appeared at the station accompanied by 18 JFD members, while supporters and Ema Meira Paibis gathered outside. He was questioned by the Imphal East Additional SP.
The police registered FIR No. 240(08)2026/PRT-PS on August 17 under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, citing potential disruption to public life and governance. The FIR initially named anonymous “Members of JFD”.
The JFD had observed the strike from midnight August 17 to August 19, opposing census operations and enumerator training until an NRC process is undertaken. Protests intensified on August 19, with road blockades, demonstrations and effigy burning reported in several areas.
Meanwhile, five civil society organisations led by the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to defer Census 2027 in Manipur, citing security concerns, displacement and administrative disruption.
In a memorandum submitted through the Governor, the groups said nearly 60,000 people had been displaced and warned that conducting the census before rehabilitation could distort population figures and affect future delimitation, welfare planning and resource allocation.
