Joint Tribes Council Manipur cites alleged government inaction over six Naga killings and August 20 Kangpokpi crackdown
Imphal: The working committee of the Joint Tribes Council Manipur (JTCM) has announced an indefinite ban on goods-carrying vehicles along national highways passing through Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei and Zeme areas.
The council said the decision was taken in protest against what it described as the state government’s alleged inaction over the killing of six Naga men and the August 20 crackdown on demonstrators in Kangpokpi district.
According to the JTCM, protests in Kangpokpi turned violent after security forces allegedly used tear gas against demonstrators, leaving several people injured.
The council also expressed dissatisfaction over the progress of the investigation into the killings, noting that although the case has been transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), those responsible have not yet been identified.
The JTCM further accused state and Central security forces of bias, alleging that operations had disproportionately targeted Naga Village Guards based on unverified reports. It also claimed that villagers continue to face security threats from armed groups, while local defence volunteers face interference from authorities.
The working committee urged regional coordination units and local bodies to enforce the vehicle ban peacefully. It warned that the agitation could intensify if the authorities fail to address its demands for safety, accountability and justice.
