Residents staged a black flag protest during Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s visit to Senapati, demanding justice for six Naga civilians allegedly abducted and killed
Imphal: A black flag protest greeted Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh during his visit to Senapati district on Wednesday, as residents demanded justice for six Naga civilians allegedly abducted and killed earlier this year.
As the Chief Minister’s convoy entered the district, protesters lined the roads carrying black flags and placards, alleging that the six civilians were abducted by Kuki groups from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district on May 13. They claimed the victims’ mutilated bodies were recovered on June 10 and called for a time-bound, impartial investigation and strict action against those responsible.
Despite the protest, Khemchand continued with his scheduled engagements, reviewing developmental projects and interacting with civil society organisations and local communities.
During a visit to the Mao potato farm, the Chief Minister acknowledged concerns over inadequate funding affecting production and said the government would examine measures to strengthen horticulture and floriculture in the region.
Addressing a public gathering, Khemchand announced formal approval for the Rikhruri Multipurpose Dam project, stating it would provide drinking water to 27 nearby villages. He also assured that demands submitted by the Mao Council, Poumai Naga Union and Mao Students’ Union, including the proposal for a Multipurpose Skill Training, Trade and Youth Activity Centre, would be examined by the state government.
