The AAP Rajya Sabha MP sought financial assistance for flood-hit families, farmers and livestock owners, along with a permanent strategy to tackle Assam’s recurring floods

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take urgent steps to address Assam’s worsening flood situation, including declaring the floods a “national disaster” and announcing a dedicated relief package.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Singh highlighted the impact of the floods across districts including Charaideo, Sivasagar and Jorhat. He claimed that more than 10 lakh people have been affected and that the floods have resulted in over 100 deaths.
The MP said extensive flooding has damaged agricultural land and destroyed standing crops, while the loss of cattle and livestock has added to the financial burden on rural families. Several households have also reportedly been forced to leave their homes.

Singh raised concerns over shortages of food, drinking water and essential medicines, warning that prolonged flooding and poor sanitation could increase the risk of disease outbreaks.
The AAP MP further called for compensation for affected farmers, livestock owners and families whose homes have been damaged. He also proposed allowing MPs to use MPLAD funds for emergency relief, reconstruction and rehabilitation.
Beyond immediate assistance, Singh urged the Centre to develop a comprehensive long-term flood management strategy for Assam, including stronger infrastructure and permanent measures to reduce the state’s recurring flood vulnerability.
