Mizoram Assembly Session: ‘Ro Min Rel Sak Ang Che’ Likely to Receive Formal State Song Status

The Mizoram Assembly will hold its two-day monsoon session from August 25, with formal recognition of ‘Ro Min Rel Sak Ang Che’ as the state song likely to be taken up

Aizwal: The Mizoram Assembly will convene its two-day monsoon session from August 25, with the formal recognition of ‘Ro Min Rel Sak Ang Che’ as the state’s official song expected to be among the key matters before the House.

The session programme was finalised by the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) at a meeting chaired by Speaker Lalbiakzama on August 14, an Assembly official said.

A resolution seeking formal recognition of the song is likely to be introduced during the session. The state Cabinet had approved ‘Ro Min Rel Sak Ang Che’ as Mizoram’s official song on August 10.

Written and composed by Mizo writer Rokunga in 1947, the song’s title translates to “Be Thou Our Counsellor”. It was used as the national anthem by the underground Mizo National Front government during the insurgency.

Although it has never received formal state recognition, the song has long been regarded by many people in Mizoram as an unofficial state anthem. Its use in public institutions increased in 2022 after the then government directed schools to sing it before classes.

The Assembly is also expected to consider the Mizoram Water Information and Governance Bill, 2026, which has been submitted to the Assembly secretariat.

Members are likely to raise several issues through questions during the session. The Assembly has received 295 starred and 73 unstarred questions, which ministers will answer orally and in writing.
