Assam Floods: Death toll Rises to 105 as Affected Population Falls Below 32,000

Assam’s flood situation improved on August 17, but one more drowning in Sivasagar raised the flood-related death toll to 105

Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam showed further improvement on August 17, although one more person drowned in Sivasagar, taking the flood-related death toll in the state to 105, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

The latest ASDMA bulletin said around 31,900 people across Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar remained affected by the floods.

Nagaon continued to be the worst-hit district, with nearly 20,000 people affected, followed by Jorhat with more than 5,000 and Sivasagar with over 4,500.

The affected population has declined significantly from Sunday, when around 52,000 people across five districts were impacted by the floods. Authorities are currently operating 15 relief camps and distribution centres across the four affected districts, providing assistance to 2,782 people.

Despite the improvement, floodwaters continue to submerge 147 villages across the state. Around 3,198.77 hectares of cropland have also been damaged.

The ASDMA bulletin reported damage to several embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure in different parts of Assam. The floods have also affected 16,323 livestock and poultry across the state.
