Tensions rose along the Silapathar-Likabali highway after protesters allegedly pelted stones at police and CRPF personnel amid an economic blockade
Guwahati: Tension escalated along the Silapathar-Likabali highway on August 13 as an ongoing economic blockade over a recent Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border firing incident turned violent, with protesters allegedly pelting stones at police and CRPF personnel.
The situation remained tense in parts of Assam’s Dhemaji and Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Siang following the August 10 firing at Mingmang Basti, which left 12 people injured. The incident reportedly followed a dispute over alleged encroachment of Assam land.
The Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) launched an indefinite economic blockade on August 12, disrupting road connectivity between the two states. Vehicles bearing Arunachal Pradesh registration numbers were reportedly stopped at several entry points.
TMPK, along with the Mising Mimag Kebang and Takam Mising Mahila Kebang, has demanded the arrest of those allegedly responsible for the firing and their handover to Assam Police. The groups have also called for an early resolution to the long-pending border dispute and an end to alleged encroachment on Assam territory.
Authorities have urged protesters and residents to maintain peace and exercise restraint as security forces monitor the sensitive areas.
