Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the tribute to Assam’s first woman to scale Mount Everest, recognising her achievement and inspiring future generations
Guwahati: The Assam government will construct a 1-km road leading to the residence of Rupamoni Gorh, the first woman from the state to scale Mount Everest, and name it in her honour, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced. The decision recognises Gorh’s historic achievement and her contribution to inspiring young people, particularly women, across Assam.
Gorh created history on May 21, 2026, when she became the first Assamese woman to summit Mount Everest as part of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) All-Women’s Everest Expedition. The proposed road in Lakhimpur will serve as a permanent tribute to her accomplishment and commemorate a milestone that brought pride to the state.
The government said the initiative reflects its commitment to recognising individuals who have brought national and international recognition to Assam while encouraging the youth to pursue ambitious goals.
It added that Gorh’s journey from Assam to the world’s highest peak symbolises determination, resilience and discipline, and the road named after her will stand as a lasting reminder of women’s empowerment and excellence.
