Assam Chief Minister visits historic Cooch Behar site, seeks land for expansion and proposes religious tourism circuit linking Madhupur Satra with Batadrava Than
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday visited the historic Sri Sri Madhupur Satra in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district and called for joint efforts by Assam and West Bengal to preserve the site associated with Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva’s legacy.
The Chief Minister offered prayers at the satra and held discussions with the Satradhikar and other authorities on its preservation and development. The Assam government has allocated Rs 35 crore for infrastructure development at the historic site.
He also sought cooperation from the West Bengal government, including land, to expand the development project. He said both states should work together to safeguard the satra and its cultural heritage.
The Chief Minister further proposed a religious tourism circuit linking Madhupur Satra with Batadrava Than in Nagaon, the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardeva. He also suggested inviting a West Bengal delegation to Batadrava Than as part of efforts to strengthen the cultural links between the two states.
The delegation included Assam ministers Ashok Singhal and Ashwini Roy Sarkar, along with West Bengal minister Nishith Pramanik and other public representatives.
