The organisation said it would intensify its agitation if the state government fails to begin steps towards updating the National Register of Citizens
Imphal: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) on Saturday gave the Manipur government an August 6 deadline to initiate steps towards updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC), warning of an intensified democratic agitation from August 7 if its demand is not met.
In a statement, the organisation urged the Governor and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh to begin the process to identify alleged illegal immigrants. JFD alleged that illegal immigration had altered Manipur’s demographic profile and contributed to the state’s prolonged unrest.
The organisation said it had repeatedly submitted memoranda to the Centre and the state government seeking NRC updation and had also conducted public awareness campaigns on the issue.
According to JFD, a public meeting held at the Manipur Press Club on July 26 resolved to intensify the movement if the government failed to adopt a resolution on NRC updation before the Housing Census begins on August 17 and the Population Census on February 1, 2027.
The organisation reiterated that updating the NRC was necessary to identify alleged illegal immigrants and safeguard the state’s demographic balance.
