Two more deaths in Sivasagar push the toll to 80, while the state announces loan relief and seeks a special Central package as flood conditions gradually improve
Guwahati: Assam’s flood death toll has risen to 80 after two more people, including a boy, died in Sivasagar district over the past 24 hours, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Despite the latest fatalities, the flood situation has shown signs of improvement, with the number of affected people declining to 2,12,400 across eight districts: Golaghat, Sivasagar, Biswanath, Charaideo, Kamrup (Metropolitan), Jorhat, Dhemaji and Nagaon. A total of 437 villages under 21 revenue circles remain inundated.
Charaideo is the worst-hit district with nearly 80,000 affected people, followed by Sivasagar (71,000) and Jorhat (40,000). Authorities are operating 112 relief camps and distribution centres, sheltering 75,583 displaced people.
Floodwaters continue to affect 17,198.09 hectares of cropland, while nearly 2.97 lakh livestock and poultry have also been impacted. The Dhansiri River remains above the danger level at Numaligarh.
