The Indian long-distance runner stormed to a historic silver in Glasgow with a stunning final-lap sprint, while Harjinder Kaur added another silver in weightlifting
New Delhi: India’s Gulveer Singh scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a medal in the men’s 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games, clinching a memorable silver in Glasgow on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old clocked 27:49.78 after producing a sensational final-lap sprint, finishing just behind Australia’s Ky Robinson (27:48.93). David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man claimed bronze in 27:50.28.
A Naib Subedar in the Indian Army’s Grenadiers Regiment, Gulveer hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district. The medal adds to his Asian Games bronze and double gold at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships. He also holds India’s national records in the 3,000m, 5,000m and 10,000m.
India’s weightlifting campaign also received a boost as Harjinder Kaur upgraded her Birmingham 2022 bronze to silver in the women’s 69kg event with a total lift of 221kg (101kg snatch and 120kg clean and jerk). Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau won gold with a Games record, while Australia’s Olivia Hayman took bronze.
