Olympic silver medalist overcomes injuries to claim a record-breaking third consecutive Commonwealth Games title and hand India its first gold at Glasgow 2026
New Delhi: Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu created history by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event at Glasgow 2026, becoming one of the few Indian athletes to achieve the feat. The victory also earned India its first gold medal of the Games.
An emotional Chanu said the triumph was the result of years of sacrifice and perseverance. She said, “I am extremely happy and also very emotional. I made so many sacrifices and overcame stress and injuries to reach the Games and win a medal.”
Chanu opened with a Commonwealth record 85kg lift in the snatch before recovering from a missed first clean and jerk attempt to set new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records. She sealed the title with a superb 105kg lift.
India also celebrated two silver medals in weightlifting, with Chanambam Rishikanta Singh finishing second in the men’s 60kg event and Raja Muthupandi claiming silver in the men’s 65kg category.
