State government orders withdrawal of all police cases linked to NEET-UG protests and initiates the release of those arrested after reviewing the circumstances surrounding the demonstrations
Guwahati: The Assam government has decided to withdraw all police cases registered in connection with protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET (UG) examination and initiate the release of those arrested, effectively closing all legal proceedings related to the demonstrations.
According to the government, five cases had been registered across the state as of 6 pm on July 26, leading to the arrest of 13 people. Following a review, it decided not to pursue further legal action and directed authorities to withdraw all cases, irrespective of the stage of legal proceedings, in accordance with the law.
The decision comes a day after the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) raised concerns over the alleged detention and arrest of protesters in Assam, West Bengal and Bihar despite assurances that no punitive action would be taken. The party had demanded the immediate release of detainees and withdrawal of all FIRs, warning that any deviation from the government’s commitment would amount to a breach of trust.
The government also said no further adverse action would be taken against those who participated in the protests, signalling a shift towards examination reforms and accountability.
