Chief Minister urges BJP workers to join relief efforts as flood situation improves slightly, though 5.24 lakh people remain affected
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the flood death toll in the state has risen to 68, including one fatality reported from Guwahati. Urging BJP workers to actively participate in relief efforts, he announced a Rs 12-crore initiative to distribute 2 lakh Mekhela-Chadors to flood-affected women and clothing to 2 lakh children.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita said floods have affected 2,101 villages across 77 revenue circles, with Jorhat, Sivasagar and Charaideo among the worst-hit districts. He said 170 relief camps and 1,326 relief distribution centres have been set up, 401 houses have been completely destroyed and 29,910 people rescued. Medical and veterinary teams have also been deployed in affected areas.
The latest Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) bulletin showed signs of improvement, with the number of affected people dropping to 5,24,733 across 763 villages in nine districts. Sivasagar (1,54,064), Charaideo (1,88,404) and Jorhat (1,37,775) remain the worst affected.
Authorities have established 354 relief camps and distribution centres, sheltering 37,724 people while assisting another 1,53,833. Floodwaters have submerged 48,742.09 hectares of cropland, damaged 579 houses completely and 1,611 partially, affected 88,240 livestock and washed away 26,512 animals.
Rescue operations involving the SDRF, NDRF, Army and Air Force continue with 36 boats, two helicopters and 152 medical teams. Relief materials, including food grains, drinking water, mosquito nets and other essentials, are being distributed, while 105 roads remain damaged or submerged across the affected districts.
