Chief Minister visits flood-hit Sonari, reviews rescue operations as death toll reaches 31 and over 7.27 lakh people remain affected across 25 districts
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday visited flood-affected Sonari in Charaideo district, where he reviewed rescue and relief operations amid the state’s worsening flood crisis.
Inspecting inundated villages and interacting with displaced families in relief camps, the Chief Minister described the disaster as “an unprecedented situation,” saying the extent of damage was far greater than initially anticipated.
“This is an unprecedented situation. A large number of people have taken shelter in relief camps, while many others remain stranded by the floodwaters. There have been several deaths, and more bodies are still being recovered,” he said.
The Chief Minister said the NDRF, SDRF, Army and state agencies were jointly carrying out rescue operations. He also noted that the state’s disaster relief fund is fully financed by the Centre. “If necessary, we will also approach the Prime Minister for more funds,” the Chief Minister added.
According to the latest state flood update, the floods have now affected 7,27,506 people across 25 districts, with 1,700 villages and 74 revenue circles inundated. The flood-related death toll stands at 31, while three people remain missing.
Authorities are operating 95 relief camps, sheltering 18,574 people, besides 469 relief distribution centres. The floods have also damaged 401 houses completely, 1,848 partially, and claimed 185 livestock, as rescue and rehabilitation efforts continue across the state.
