Heavy rainfall triggers flash floods, landslides and widespread waterlogging, with IMD warning of more rain until July 26
Bishnupur: Continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days has worsened the flood situation in Manipur after a 10-foot breach developed in the Nambol River embankment at Kongkham Mamang Leikai in Bishnupur district.
The breach, reported around 2 pm, inundated agricultural land, residential areas and fish ponds, with residents reporting that strong currents washed away fish stocks.
According to the State Water Resources Department, both the Nambol and Nambul rivers are flowing above the warning level due to persistent rainfall. Low-lying areas of Imphal, especially along Tiddim Road, remain waterlogged, while landslides have disrupted parts of Tamenglong and Noney districts.
Emergency repair work is underway, with personnel from the Bishnupur district administration, Nambol Police, the Indian Red Cross Society and local residents working to plug the breach. However, the embankment had not been fully repaired at the time of reporting.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Manipur and several northeastern states, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall until July 26, raising fears of further flooding and landslides.
