The Centre has activated emergency mobile roaming in three flood-hit Assam districts as the death toll rises to 31 and over 5.64 lakh people remain affected
Guwahati: The Central government has activated emergency mobile roaming services in three flood-hit districts of Upper Assam as the state’s flood crisis deepened, claiming 21 more lives in the past 24 hours and taking the overall death toll to 31.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has enabled the Intra-Circle Roaming (ICR) facility in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat until July 24, allowing mobile users to access any available telecom network if their own operator’s service is disrupted by flooding.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) urged residents to utilise the facility for emergency communication and rescue coordination. Emergency assistance is available through helplines 1070, 1079, 112, the State Control Room (0361-2237219, 09401044617), and District Control Rooms on 1077.
According to ASDMA, floods have affected over 5.64 lakh people across 16 districts, submerged 872 villages, inundated 24,210 hectares of farmland, and forced more than 1.14 lakh people into 273 relief camps and distribution centres.
Sivasagar remains the worst-hit district with over 3.59 lakh affected residents, followed by Jorhat (87,662) and Charaideo (72,646). Rescue operations by the Army, Air Force, NDRF, SDRF, Assam Police and district administrations continue across the affected areas.
In Jorhat’s Seleng Ghat, an NDRF team rescued five stranded people, including an elderly woman suffering from severe hypothermia, as authorities remain on high alert amid continuing floods.
