Heavy rain floods Guwahati, five rivers flow above danger mark, train services disrupted, Akhil Gogoi issues helpline as rescue operations intensify across Upper Assam
Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam deteriorated sharply, with more than 1.70 lakh people affected across 12 districts, while heavy rainfall triggered widespread waterlogging in Guwahati and disrupted rail connectivity in Upper Assam.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), urban flooding inundated several parts of Guwahati, including Zoo Tiniali, Hatigaon, Beltola, Chandmari, Maligaon, Anil Nagar and Rukminigaon. Dewatering pumps have been deployed at key locations to drain accumulated rainwater.
Across the state, 1,70,327 people in 580 villages under 30 revenue circles have been affected, while over 10,362 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged. Five major rivers, including the Brahmaputra at Neamatighat, are flowing above the danger mark.
Rescue operations have intensified with NDRF and SDRF teams deployed in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat. Earlier, the state government placed the Indian Army and Indian Air Force on standby as flooding worsened in Upper Assam.
Rail services in the Simaluguri-Namtiali and Simaluguri-Selenghat sections have been suspended after the overflowing Dikhow River submerged railway tracks and station infrastructure, while several long-distance trains have been diverted.
In Sivasagar, MLA Akhil Gogoi appealed to residents to share flood updates and rescue requests through a dedicated WhatsApp helpline (8822424271). He said he had urged the Chief Minister to launch immediate rescue operations, establish relief camps and assess flood damage, with the government informing him that the Army and Air Force were ready to assist if required.
Floodwaters have also breached the Bhogdoi River embankment in Jorhat, inundating Borigaon and nearby localities, where SDRF teams are evacuating stranded residents.
