Gitanjali Angmo cites “lack of transparency” at Safdarjung Hospital, seeks transfer to another medical centre as opposition leaders condemn Wangchuk’s forcible removal
New Delhi: After social activist Sonam Wangchuk was forcibly removed from the Jantar Mantar protest site and admitted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, his wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, has sought his transfer to a medical centre of their choice, alleging a “lack of transparency” in his treatment.
In a letter to the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Angmo claimed doctors informed the family that Wangchuk’s potassium level had dropped to 2.9 despite recording 4.3 the previous evening. She alleged the hospital refused to share digital or physical medical reports, saying the lack of transparency had “shaken our trust”.
Speaking to the media, Gitanjali Angmo said she would lead the proposed “Chalo Parliament” march on July 20 if Sonam Wangchuk is unable to participate due to his health. “Even if Sonam can’t join the July 20 march, I will represent him and lead that march.” Angmo said the protest would continue peacefully and urged supporters to participate in large numbers to press for dialogue and accountability over the issues raised by the agitation.
Safdarjung Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Charu Bamba said Wangchuk is “fully alert and stable“, adding that he is experiencing mild dehydration and weakness due to prolonged fasting but remains under continuous monitoring.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and several other leaders condemned Wangchuk’s forcible removal, calling it an attack on democratic rights and peaceful protest.
