Dipke announced the fast after Wangchuk was taken to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police, while protesters vowed to continue the movement and the planned Parliament march
New Delhi: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke began an indefinite hunger strike after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted from the Jantar Mantar protest site to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital by the police.
“I am starting an indefinite hunger strike beginning right now,” Dipke said in a post on X. He alleged that Delhi Police assaulted and detained him during the operation and prevented him from returning to the protest site. Police have not confirmed those allegations.
Delhi Police said Wangchuk was moved for essential medical care following expert medical advice and in compliance with a Delhi High Court order directing authorities to monitor his health. Doctors at Safdarjung Hospital said he was weak due to prolonged fasting and mild dehydration but remained alert and stable under observation.
The CJP said the planned “Chalo Parliament” march on July 20 will proceed despite Wangchuk’s hospitalisation. Student activists, including Neha, Aameen and Manish, also continued their parallel hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in support of the movement.
