Orange Alert issued for Dhubri and South Salmara, while Guwahati and 22 other districts remain under weather watch amid forecasts of heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning
Guwahati: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has issued fresh weather alerts across Assam, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall over the next few hours, while the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has advised residents to remain cautious amid forecasts of worsening weather conditions.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dhubri and South Salmara districts have been placed under an Orange Alert, with very heavy rainfall expected at isolated locations.
A Yellow Alert has been issued for 22 districts, including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Sribhumi, Hailakandi, Morigaon, Kamrup Metropolitan, Kamrup, Barpeta, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Chirang and Kokrajhar. These districts are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places.
Separately, ASDMA has warned that Guwahati and adjoining areas are likely to receive 6 to 12 cm of rainfall within 24 hours over the next two to three days. The authority cautioned that the rain could aggravate waterlogging, trigger flash floods, slow vehicular movement and increase the risk of localised landslides in vulnerable areas.
District administrations have been directed to remain on alert, while emergency response systems have been activated. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall, and those living in low-lying or hillside areas have been urged to stay vigilant.
ASDMA has also requested government offices and other institutions to consider allowing employees to leave early in view of the weather forecast. The authority said updates will be shared through its official website and social media platforms and urged the public to follow official advisories for safety.
