University says the “VIP Dining Hall” reference in the tender was an inadvertent mistake, corrected before work began, and the project is intended to improve common facilities for visitors
Guwahati: Gauhati University on Wednesday clarified that the proposed construction work at its Guest House is intended to expand common facilities for visitors and that the reference to a “VIP Dining Hall” in an earlier tender document was an inadvertent error that has already been corrected.
The clarification comes after criticism over the proposed Rs 2.08 crore project for constructing a dining hall, kitchen and staff quarters at the Guest House.
In an official statement, the university said the Guest House regularly accommodates selection committee members, external examiners, visiting faculty, resource persons, alumni, parents, students and delegates attending academic, administrative and cultural programmes.
According to the university, the growing scale of academic and administrative activities has significantly increased the number of visitors, making the existing dining hall inadequate. It added that the kitchen, store and staff accommodation have also deteriorated over the years and require urgent upgradation.
The university stated that the expression “VIP Dining Hall” was mistakenly used in one of the tender documents as an unofficial internal reference for visiting professors, experts and dignitaries. It clarified that the terminology did not reflect the actual scope of the project.
The error was corrected in the Letter of Intent issued on June 24, 2026, where the work was described as the construction of a dining hall at the Gauhati University Guest House.
The university has also sought an explanation from the Superintending Engineer in charge of the Engineering Department over the incorrect terminology and reiterated that the project is solely aimed at strengthening common Guest House infrastructure.
