State proposes 33,240 healthcare jobs, four new medical colleges, Rs 10,000 crore road plan, Rs 77,353 crore power roadmap, tourism incentives and over two lakh government jobs in five years
Guwahati: The Assam Government unveiled an ambitious development roadmap in the 2026-27 State Budget, proposing major investments across healthcare, infrastructure, education, tourism, energy, agriculture and employment.
Presenting the Budget in the Assembly, Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah announced the creation of 33,240 healthcare posts, including 6,814 MBBS doctors, alongside a proposal to deploy an MBBS doctor at every Health Sub-Centre. Four new medical colleges have also been proposed in Goalpara, Hailakandi, Hojai and Bajali, taking the state’s planned network to 28 institutions.
Infrastructure received a significant boost with the launch of Asom Mala 4.0, a Rs 10,000 crore programme to construct 800 km of roads, while mega projects such as the Guwahati Ring Road, Silchar High-Speed Corridor, Kaziranga Elevated Corridor and Gohpur-Numaligarh Tunnel continue. The Budget also announced plans for an Aerotropolis around Guwahati airport with Rs 2,100 crore earmarked for land acquisition.
The government proposed Rs 77,353 crore in investments across hydro, thermal and solar power projects to transform Assam into a power-surplus state, alongside major upgrades to transmission infrastructure.
Higher education received a Rs 1,750 crore package for universities, support for autonomous colleges and continuation of provincialisation and teacher welfare schemes. Tourism initiatives include a new Homestay Policy, incentives for five-star hotels and enhanced international connectivity.
The Budget also extended the Apon Ghar and Apon Bahan schemes for another five years, targeted over two lakh government jobs in the next five years, highlighted investment projects worth Rs 3.10 lakh crore under Advantage Assam 2.0, and continued welfare measures for farmers, women, students, tea garden workers and persons with disabilities, while reaffirming the government’s focus on long-term, infrastructure-led economic growth.
