Congress president calls for immediate compensation, rehabilitation and stronger rescue efforts as floods and landslides continue to devastate Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Sikkim
New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge urged the Central government to utilise the PM CARES Fund to strengthen relief and rehabilitation efforts in flood- and landslide-hit states across the Northeast, calling for immediate financial assistance and long-term support for affected families.
In a statement posted on social media, Kharge expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Sikkim, and said the Congress party stood in solidarity with those displaced by the disasters.
Criticising the BJP-led governments, Kharge said repeated promises to make the Northeast “flood-free” had not translated into lasting solutions, with floods continuing to cause widespread damage every year. He argued that the recurring disasters highlighted inadequate preparedness and the need for stronger long-term flood mitigation measures.
“The Modi Govt cannot afford to treat this as another routine disaster response. It must immediately utilise the PM CARES Fund to provide adequate compensation, comprehensive rehabilitation and sustained relief to every affected family,” he said.
Kharge also called for the deployment of additional personnel, resources and financial assistance to intensify rescue operations, rebuild damaged infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted supply of essential commodities in affected areas.
While appreciating the efforts of the Armed Forces, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), he said the scale of the humanitarian crisis demanded a far stronger response. He also directed Congress leaders and workers to actively participate in relief efforts across flood-affected regions.
