ULFA-I Terror Plot Foiled in Assam: Two Militants Held With AK-56 Rifles, Grenades

Assam Police say the arrested ULFA-I cadres were allegedly assigned to target civilians in Tinsukia, with a large cache of arms and ammunition recovered during the intelligence-led operation

Guwahati: Assam Police claimed to have foiled a suspected mass-casualty terror plot with the arrest of two alleged active cadres of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) during an intelligence-led operation at Jagun in Tinsukia district.

According to police, the two militants had allegedly been tasked with carrying out indiscriminate attacks on civilians in Tinsukia town to spread fear and destabilise the region. The operation was conducted jointly by Tinsukia Police and central security agencies following specific intelligence inputs.

The arrested individuals were identified as SS 2nd Lt. Siyor Asom alias Humenjyoti Baruah (27) of Panitola and SS 2nd Lt. Manoj Asom alias Papu Moran (30) of Baghjan, both residents of Tinsukia district.

Police said they recovered two AK-56 assault rifles, 172 rounds of AK-series ammunition, two hand grenades, backpacks, medicine kits, syringes, opioids and food supplies allegedly intended for prolonged survival in jungle terrain.

In an official statement, Assam Police said, “Preliminary investigation indicates that the two ULFA (I) cadres had been assigned to target innocent civilians in Tinsukia.” Investigators also suspect the alleged conspiracy may bear the imprint of external actors attempting to create instability in the region.

Authorities are now probing the source of the recovered weapons, the suspects’ movement routes, logistical support network and possible cross-border links. Tinsukia shares proximity with insurgent transit corridors leading towards Arunachal Pradesh and areas near the Myanmar border, which have historically been associated with militant movement.
