Brahmaputra Swells: Ferry Services Across Guwahati Suspended Until Further Notice

Ferry operations, including services to Umananda Temple and routes connecting the North and South banks of the Brahmaputra, have been halted as a precautionary measure amid rising river levels

Guwahati: All ferry services operating in and around Guwahati have been suspended from June 25 following a sharp rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra River, authorities said.

The Inland Water Transport (IWT) Department announced the suspension as a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety amid strong river currents and unstable navigation conditions caused by ongoing monsoon activity.

Among the affected services are ferry operations to and from Umananda Temple, one of Guwahati’s most visited pilgrimage and tourist destinations situated on an island in the Brahmaputra. Authorities said services to the temple have been temporarily halted due to safety concerns.

The suspension also covers all ferry routes connecting the North and South banks of the river, affecting hundreds of daily commuters who rely on water transport for travel between different parts of the city and adjoining areas.

Officials stated that ferry services will remain suspended until further notice and will resume only after the river water level falls below the danger mark and navigation conditions are deemed safe.

According to the department, the Brahmaputra has witnessed a significant increase in water levels in recent days due to heavy rainfall and increased upstream discharge, prompting authorities to take preventive measures. “The suspension has been imposed in the interest of passenger safety,” officials said.

Residents and commuters have been advised to make alternative travel arrangements and monitor official updates issued by the IWT Department regarding the restoration of services. Authorities have also urged people to avoid unnecessary movement near the riverbanks as water levels continue to rise across several parts of Assam.
