Most victims were students and interns aged 22-27 trapped inside a commercial building housing a coaching centre and animation studio; CM Yogi Adityanath orders SIT probe

Lucknow: A devastating fire at a commercial building housing a coaching centre and animation studio in Lucknow’s Aliganj area has claimed 15 lives, most of them students and interns aged between 22 and 27 years, turning an ordinary afternoon into one of the city’s deadliest fire tragedies in recent years.
Officials said the blaze erupted on Monday and rapidly engulfed parts of the three-storey structure, trapping dozens inside. Around 35 students were reportedly present when the fire broke out. While some escaped, others became trapped in smoke-filled rooms, with several attempting to take shelter in bathrooms or jumping from upper floors to save themselves.
At least nine people sustained injuries and were shifted to the Trauma Centre at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), where treatment is ongoing. Doctors confirmed that 15 victims were brought dead.
Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have originated in a pet shop located in the building’s lower section, possibly due to an electrical short circuit, before spreading rapidly through combustible materials.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited both the accident site and KGMU, where he met injured victims and grieving families. He assured strict action against those responsible and announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the seriously injured.
The state government has constituted a two-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) and directed it to submit its findings within seven days. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced ex gratia assistance and expressed condolences.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over fire safety compliance in commercial buildings, prompting authorities to plan a city-wide safety audit.
