With 7 gates of the Khandong Dam open and the Kapili flowing just below the danger level, authorities have intensified monitoring and issued alerts across 18 Assam districts

Guwahati: The Kapili River is witnessing a rapid rise in water levels following the release of water from the Khandong Dam in Dima Hasao, placing downstream districts on alert and raising concerns over possible flooding in vulnerable areas.
Authorities opened seven gates of the Khandong reservoir after persistent rainfall pushed water levels higher, increasing discharge into the river system. As a result, several downstream stretches have reported strong currents and foam-covered waters, signalling the impact of the intensified flow.
According to data from the Central Water Commission, the Kapili was flowing at 59.55 metres as of Monday evening, just below its danger level of 60.50 metres. The river’s highest recorded flood level stands at 62.20 metres, reached in June 2022.
In response, the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) has alerted administrations in 18 districts of Assam, urging them to strengthen preparedness measures and inform residents living near riverbanks and low-lying zones.
Officials have advised people to avoid entering the river and to move livestock, vehicles and other valuables away from vulnerable areas as a precaution. Meanwhile, district authorities are coordinating with disaster management teams and local agencies to closely track the situation.
With rainfall continuing across parts of the region, officials remain watchful, emphasising that timely public cooperation will be critical in preventing accidents and ensuring safety along the Kapili river basin.
