The initiative will rejuvenate a 370-metre stretch of the Basistha River through ecological restoration, green infrastructure and improved public amenities

Guwahati: The Brahmaputra Board has begun work on a major riverfront improvement initiative along the Basistha River in Guwahati, aiming to transform a polluted and neglected stretch into a cleaner, greener and more accessible public space.
The Basistha Riverfront Development Project was inaugurated on Friday by Ranbir Singh, Chairman of the Brahmaputra Board, in the presence of local residents, senior citizens and officials.
The project targets a 370-metre stretch of the river adjoining the Board’s headquarters in Basistha. Over the years, the area had witnessed unchecked dumping of solid waste, resulting in environmental damage, foul odours, mosquito breeding and growing health concerns for nearby communities.
To address these challenges, the project will introduce a range of interventions, including landscaped green zones, plantation drives, pedestrian walkways, viewing decks, riverbank stabilisation measures and upgraded sanitation and waste-management facilities.
Officials said the initiative is designed not only to improve the riverfront’s appearance but also to restore ecological balance and strengthen local biodiversity. The project further seeks to create a safe and attractive recreational space for residents.
For planning and design, the Board has partnered with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) to ensure environmentally sensitive and sustainable development.
Authorities believe the project could become a blueprint for future river rejuvenation efforts along other stretches of the Basistha River and beyond.
