Dibrugarh Administration Evicts 60 Families from Encroached Brahmaputra Riverbank

Structures built on nine bighas of government land in Maijan were demolished following a court order; evicted families demand action against alleged land brokers

Dibrugarh: The Dibrugarh district administration cleared nearly 60 families from an encroached stretch of the Brahmaputra riverbank in Maijan, ending what officials said was more than a decade of illegal occupation of government land.

The eviction drive covered around nine bighas of land, where several families had built permanent houses, including RCC structures. The operation was carried out following an order from the District and Sessions Court, Dibrugarh, after notices had been served to the occupants.

Heavy security was deployed during the drive, although the operation remained peaceful as residents removed their belongings before excavators razed the structures.

Dibrugarh East Revenue Circle Officer Samujjwal Borah said, “We had made adequate security arrangements keeping in mind the scale of the eviction, but the residents cooperated fully with the administration. There was no untoward incident during the entire operation.”

Several evicted residents claimed they had purchased the plots from land brokers, paying amounts ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 3 lakh.

“Seven years ago we paid Rs 1.5 lakh to a broker who assured us the land was legal. Now we have lost both our money and our home,” an evicted woman said. Another resident alleged an organised land racket was behind the settlements, saying, “We all fell victim to fraudulent land brokers who illegally sold us government land for their personal profit.”

The affected families have now demanded a probe and strict action against those allegedly involved in the land transactions.
