Narendra Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister

With 4,399 consecutive days in office, Modi surpasses Jawaharlal Nehru’s record as the NDA marks 12 years at the Centre

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi achieved a historic political milestone, becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister after completing 4,399 consecutive days in office, overtaking the record held by Jawaharlal Nehru.

The achievement coincides with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) completing 12 years in power at the Centre. NDA leaders are expected to gather in New Delhi to mark the occasion and acknowledge Modi’s record-breaking tenure.

Unlike Nehru, whose term began before India’s first general elections in 1951-52, Modi holds the distinction of serving the longest uninterrupted tenure as an elected Prime Minister. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served nearly 16 years in office, but across two separate terms.

Since assuming office in 2014, Modi has overseen several flagship programmes, including Digital India, Swachh Bharat Mission, Make in India, and Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, while also focusing on infrastructure development, welfare delivery and financial inclusion.

The milestone has drawn international recognition. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described it as a testament to Modi’s enduring leadership, while US Senator John Cornyn termed his tenure “transformational,” citing India’s economic progress and expanding global influence.

Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said Modi’s leadership ushered in several political milestones, including the party’s first full parliamentary majority in three decades. Supporters have described the achievement as a reflection of sustained public mandate, political stability and continuity in governance.
